Join Janet Carson and explore the magnificent gardens of the Windy City! Besides being an exciting destination for shopping, food, and art, this Midwest location on Lake Michigan creates an ideal climate for growing a diverse variety of plants.
Ball Horticulture – The Gardens at Ball have been the evaluation and testing grounds for the world’s wealth of horticultural introductions and improvements for over 80 years. What began as a row trial garden for seed varieties in 1933 has grown to encompass over 9 acres of display beds for annuals, perennials, cut flowers and vegetables, including the newest plants from the industry’s leading breeders and marketers. They’ve been designed to inspire visitors as you compare products in an exciting and innovative display – encouraging creative ideas for home garden and commercial settings.
Chicago Botanic Gardens – With 27 gardens over 385 acres to explore at the Garden, where do you begin? Start with the Grand Tram tour Learn the history and science of the Garden while viewing highlights including the McDonald Woods, Elizabeth Hubert Malott Japanese Garden, the Regenstein Learning Campus, and others. Enjoy views alongside the Garden’s 81 acres of water. Then you have time to explore and immerse yourself in the diversity of gardens.
Cantigny Park Gardens – 12 unique gardens and some spectacular open spaces. Nearly all of the annual plants in the Cantigny Gardens originate on site. Close to a quarter-million plants are produced in the Cantigny greenhouse each year — up to 1,000 botanical varieties! These herbaceous plants add color and diversity throughout the park. Cantigny garden spaces are replanted every spring, summer and fall with home-grown annuals, providing fresh visual experiences for visitors.
Morton Arboretum – Its 1700 acres of beautiful tree-filled landscapes are more than trees. Unique spaces like the Grand Garden – a lush, colorful garden to celebrate the Arboretum’s centennial. The Schulenberg Prairie – one of the nation’s oldest and most successful prairie and savanna restorations. The Rose Family, Four Seasons, Fragrance, and Ground Cover gardens offer some wonderful exploration possibilities.
A few private gardens, great food, a Chicago Architecture Cruise, some free time for exploration, and the Embassy Suites Downtown Magnificent Mile help make this a wonderful 3-night exploration.
